PlayerClaire and Darren Garforth

Horrible! There's no other word for it," laughs Claire Garforth of the kitchen in the house she and husband, Darren, bought in 2006. “Gloomy and small with a sloping floor and an electric cooker with an orange-fading-to-brown door that didn’t shut properly,” she adds. They began a major project  to convert the house, originally built in 1933, into something more suited to family life with daughter Rebecca,13, and son Harry,9 , plus Jonny, the Parson Russell Terrier. Former Rugby Union International prop Darren now runs his own scaffolding business, so, with the help of plenty of contacts in the building trade, he tackled much of the project himself.

“We virtually knocked down the entire house and rebuilt it,” explains Darren.“ And we added a big extension across the back and side of the house to create space for a new and much larger kitchen-family room.
